Proper Irrigation Conserves Water

Automatic in-ground irrigation systems are a common method for watering our lawns. Unfortunately, many irrigation systems can be inefficient. Sometimes as much as half of the water delivered through the systems doesn’t benefit the intended plants. However, proper irrigation conserves water.

However, a properly designed landscape and irrigation system WILL save water. This means organizing your plants in “irrigation zones,” using the correct sprinkler type and implementing controls to allowing for a system design that will deliver the appropriate amount of water to targeted planting beds or turf areas.

At Butler Landscape and Design we design landscaping with irrigation in mind  and install sprinklers and controls that provide the most water efficiency for each use.

Controls and Timers

rainbird-irrigation-systemMost irrigation system timers, also known as controllers, allow a great level of control over watering schedules to reduce overwater (or underwatering). Settings are adjusted by zone for the most beneficial watering  based on the time of year, type of sprinkler and type of plantings or turf.

Rain Sensor

A rain sensor automatically shuts off your sprinkler system when it rains, so you don’t have to worry when you’re home or away. This unit quickly pays off with regulated watering AND peace of mind when rainy weather warrants.

Drip Line Irrigation

drip-irrigationHow does drip irrigation conserver water? Drip irrigation is the most efficient method of irrigating. While sprinkler systems are around 75-85% efficient, drip systems typically are 90% or higher. What that means is much less wasted water! Drip irrigation works by applying water slowly, directly to the soil. The result is that the water soaks into the soil before it can evaporate or run off and the water is only applied where it is needed, (at the plant’s roots) rather than sprayed everywhere.

Spot Watering Emitters

Spot watering emitters are the watering mechanism that allow drip irrigation to be so efficient. Spot watering emitters are inserted into “drip” line tubing to reach individual trees and  plants. Drip lines and spot watering emitters are ideal for extending irrigation to widely spaced plants and trees.

MP Rotators

mp-rotatorsMost of us are familiar with rotor sprinklers that water our medium and large size lawns. However, an excellent water conserving alternative to large stream sprinklers is the new, multiple rotating streams sprinkler.

Rather than simply spraying water onto landscapes, MP Rotators deliver multiple streams of water at a steady rate using less water and promoting healthier growth.

This slower application rate allows water to gently soak into the soil and achieves an even distribution throughout the area being irrigated. This increased efficiency results in 30% less water use when compared to traditional sprays and significantly reduces wasteful runoff.
